NOTHING BUT A MAN
Directed by Michael Roemer
USA, 1964, English, 95 minutes

Though little-seen at the time of its release, the independently produced Nothing But a Man has been hailed as one of the 1960s' finest, most compelling dramatizations of what it meant to be black in the South in an area as yet untouched by the gains of the Civil Rights era.  Directed by by white documentarian Michael Roemer and co-written by Roemer and Robert Young (later famous as the director of Alambrista and Short Eyes), Nothing But a Man stars Ivan Dixon (most famously of the 1960s pow sitcom Hogan's Heroes) as Duff, a southern railroad section worker and his romance with a local preacher's daughter, here played by jazz legend Abbey Lincoln.

Body and Soul is part of the Plaza Theatre Foundation's Black History Month Film Series. Each film will be introduced by film historian Matthew H Bernstein. For a full series line-up, and other series information, click here
